Statutory redundancy claim letter

Your written claim to your employer for your statutory redundancy lump sum, or the balance if you were paid less: with the calculation, the official form RP77 filled in with your answers as an option, and the date the claim must reach your employer (52 weeks).

This site does not give legal advice. You prepare your letter from your own answers: it sets out facts and calculated amounts, with no opinion on your situation.

Your employment

This tool calculates your annual leave, public holidays and time limits for this situation. Other amounts follow rules it does not cover.

The day your employment actually ended, even if you were paid in lieu of notice.

Notice

Leave it empty if your employment ended without notice.

Leave it empty if your contract says nothing or you do not know.

For statutory redundancy

On your payslip. Most employees are Class A.

Used only to count your service from your 16th birthday. Never printed.

Absences in the last 3 years (lay-off, strike, long illness)

Only these absences reduce your service. Maternity, paternity, parental or carer’s leave and other authorised absences count as service: no need to enter them.

Your pay
Does your pay change from week to week (hours or commission)?

Before tax, for your normal hours, with regular bonuses, without overtime.

Without overtime.

Without overtime. Used for redundancy.

Regular overtime counts for redundancy.
What you received

Copy the gross amounts from your final payslip. Leave a line empty if nothing was paid for it.

Statutory or more.

Form RP77
Did your employer give you form RP50 or an “Employee Declaration Form”?

On form RP77, the first or second ground is ticked from this answer only. If you do not know, neither is ticked: you tick the right one yourself.

RP77 is the official form for a claim made to your employer. This service writes your answers on it; you check it, complete what is left by hand and sign it.
You

7 digits and 1 or 2 letters, on your payslip or P60.

As on your payslip or contract.

Your employer

For example the HR manager.

Needed to send a copy by email.

In liquidation, receivership or examinership.

Date and sending

Today by default.

How you will send it

Email needs your employer’s email address.

14 days by default, as form RP77 suggests; 7 at least.

For example: to the bank account into which my wages were paid. No IBAN needed in the letter.

Prepared in your browser: nothing you type is sent.

Keep your answers

They stay in this browser, never on our servers. Do not tick this on a shared device. Answers of the calculators kept here are reused automatically.

Claiming statutory redundancy in writing

A written claim to your employer, received within 52 weeks of the end of your employment, keeps your entitlement (Redundancy Payments Act 1967, s. 24(1)(b)). Between 52 and 104 weeks, a late claim is accepted only if the WRC finds a “reasonable cause” for the delay (s. 24(2A)).

The letter sets out your dates, your weekly pay (limited to €600), the days not counted and the lump sum calculated, and asks for payment by a date you choose (14 days by default). The redundancy calculator shows the same calculation for free.
