How statutory redundancy is calculated in Ireland

Statutory redundancy is due if your job no longer exists (or your fixed-term contract was not renewed) and you have at least 104 weeks of continuous employment with the employer, in insurable employment (Redundancy Payments Act 1967, s. 7). It is 2 weeks’ pay for each year of service, plus 1 week, with your weekly pay limited to €600.

Partial years count: your service is counted in days, divided by 365 and rounded to 2 decimals. In the 3 years before the end of your employment, days of lay-off and strike are not counted, nor illness beyond 26 consecutive weeks. If you were paid in lieu of notice, the date used is the day your notice would have ended.

Example

Start on 15 March 2019, end on 23 October 2026, €850 a week: 2,780 days, 7.62 years, 16.24 weeks × €600 = €9,744.00 (without the limit, €13,804.00).

The written claim to your employer must arrive within 52 weeks of the end of your employment (RPA s. 24(1)). The final pay check compares every amount due with what you received.
