Minimum notice in Ireland
After 13 weeks of continuous employment, your employer must give you at least: 1 week (under 2 years of service), 2 weeks (2 to 5 years), 4 weeks (5 to 10 years), 6 weeks (10 to 15 years) and 8 weeks (15 years or more) (Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act 1973, s. 4). If your contract gives more, the longer notice applies.
Notice can be paid instead of worked if you agree. Notice you did not get is paid at your normal weekly pay. If you resign after 13 weeks, you must give at least 1 week’s notice, or more if your contract says so (s. 6).
Example
Start on 15 March 2019, notice received on 9 October 2026, last day 23 October 2026, €850 a week: 7 full years, so 4 weeks of notice; 2 weeks given; 2 weeks × €850 = €1,700.00 due.
